Dyslexia is a cognitive reading disorder

Reading is an incredibly complex skill that is required to learn efficiently as a child develops.

Educators, Professional scientists, psychologists and many other researchers agree there exists a population who have cognitive difficulty in learning to read, even if no other impairments exist like: seemingly low intelligence, delayed development of the senses or emotional problems.

Dyslexia is a cognitive, language processing issue, which can be divided into two groups: dyseidesia and dysphonesia.

Dyseidetics have poor sight recognition of words. They have to sound out words and read very slowly because it is difficult for them to visualize words, spelling words that look different from what they sound like is a challenge.

Dysphonetics have difficulty sounding out words. They may read at a normal rate, but make many substitution errors.

People who suffer from Dyslexia often have a blend of these and other subtypes of dyslexia.

Unfortunately, optometrists will insist that Dyslexia can be 'cured' with some form of 'corrective' lens. If only the solution was that simple.

Many who have a reading disability, including those who have dyslexia, do develop inefficient eye movements and focusing problems. Therefore, lenses, eye glasses and vision therapy can be prescribed as part of a larger multidisciplinary effort to improve their ability to read and learn but it is not the complete answer.

Dyslexia: Praiseworthy legislation addresses dyslexia

(An extract from the Sun Herald of Mississippi and the Gulf Coast.)

One of the good pieces of legislation to come out of this year's session was signed into law by Gov. Phil Bryant.

It requires kindergartners or first graders to be tested for dyslexia, a reading disorder that occurs when the brain does not properly recognize and process certain symbols like letters in the alphabet.

The new law also gives dyslexic students in the first six grades the ability to move to a new public or non-public school if it is determined the student can be better served by the transfer.

A separate bill also signed by Bryant creates a scholarship program for people who want to study dyslexia therapy.

There's no telling how many people were considered "slow learners" because of this condition. Many were otherwise highly intelligent, but because they couldn't learn to read properly, were behind throughout their school years.

Too many dropped out. A couple of notable ones we can recall were allowed to stay in school without achieving much except to excel in football.

Bryant himself says he was in the fourth grade before a teacher discovered dyslexia was causing him to scramble words and failing to put the right sounds with letters.

"I repeated the third grade. What a difficult, horrible experience that was for a child," Bryant said at the bill signing.

Fortunately, the condition can be addressed with therapy, and the governor is living proof it can be overcome. More therapists are needed, though, and it is hoped the scholarship will increase the number.

Estimates are that between 10 and 20 percent of the population suffers from dyslexia. Good for Bryant for openly discussing his own struggles and for encouraging those who have the condition.

Good for the Legislature for addressing the subject with the new laws.

Dyslexia: With Determination the Disadvantages can be overcome

He had a higher-than-average IQ, but his school exam results did not reflect it. In Cheah Xian Pin's words, he was "very confused and unsure of what was going on".

What it was, was dyslexia. It made reading a slow, difficult process for Mr Cheah, but that did not stop him from devouring an average of one book a week, at one point.

Now 21, he is pursuing an accountancy degree at the Nanyang Technological University and working part-time at accountancy firm KPMG. For his determination to overcome the odds, Mr Cheah was one of two youths recognised with a Young Achiever's Award by the Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS).

Mr Cheah credited and thanked the teachers at DAS for being "there at my lowest point in life".

Shenlynn Lim, 20, also was diagnosed with dyslexia early on. She was then a shy girl with low self-esteem. "I struggled with my school work and did not score well in exams. My confidence took a huge beating whenever the class ranking was announced," she said.

Now chatty and confident, Ms Lim was awarded the Lien Foundation scholarship while doing a diploma in Child Psychology and Early Education at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. She has decided to working full time with DAS upon graduation.

"I hope that my humble achievement today will serve to inspire other dyslexic children. As long as you are willing to try and err, nothing is impossible," she said.

Parent takes legal action over daughter's dyslexia

A father is taking legal action against two schools and a council, claiming they failed to identify his daughter’s severe dyslexia.

Raymond Golding, 62, is seeking £225,400 from Essex County Council, Shalford Primary School and Tabor Science College, Braintree.

His 17-year-old daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia at 13 after her learning difficulties were flagged up by teachers at St Felix School, a private school in Southwold, Suffolk.

Dyslexia: How Children Learn to Read - Montessori and Phonics


The skill of reading is special - and often difficult to acquire. The fact that anyone learns how to read is something of a miracle. Learning to read is very different from learning to speak; in the development of human history, speaking precedes reading by thousands of years.

The subconscious path of written language

The human brain is wired for language (Chomsky, Logical Structure of Linguistic Theory, 1955, 75), but language acquisition does not happen without models, the way motor development does.

It must be nurtured through contact with human language models. Children who do not receive models of language in early childhood will have varying deficiencies of language later in life.

Spoken language develops both spontaneously and subconsciously. A 2-year old couldn't be taught sentence structure and grammar rules now matter how hard someone might try.

As Maria Montessori said, "The only language men ever speak perfectly is the one they learn in babyhood, when no one can teach them anything!"

Reading is different. It must be actively taught and consciously learned. If it's not actively taught, then even a life spent surrounded by the printed word will not teach someone who is illiterate how to read.

When a middle aged person finally admits that they don't know how to read, they must start at the beginning just like a child does, learning sounds and sounding out words. Imagine how many printed words - street signs, store names, words on TV - they have seen in a lifetime. But they were never able to simply "pick up" the skill of reading the way a child learns to speak.

The difference between spoken and written language

There are two very different paths for learning a language: the subconscious acquisition of spoken language and the conscious acquisition of written language.

Children must be able to subconsciously acquire spoken language; if children lacked this ability, nothing effective would have ever been done by humans. There would be no civilization.

Spoken language and written language are obviously related. One of the clearest examples of this is in the acquisition of vocabulary words.

Language experts tell us that in everyday conversation, we use about 5,000 words on a regular basis, and another 10,000 a little less frequently.

That gives us about 15,000 "common words", as they are called.

That leaves tens of thousands of other English words. How are they learned? The more complex a text is, whether it's a book, newspaper or magazine article, or webpage, the greater the percentage of "rare words" they contain; that is, words that fall outside of the 15,000 common words. Clearly, the more you read, the bigger your spoken vocabulary.

Another way that speaking and reading are connected is through decoding. Decoding is the process of pulling apart the sounds that each letter makes, and then putting them back together to make a word. It's much easier for a child to sound out a word on the page that they've already heard in conversation, than a completely new word.

There's less information to process since the meaning and pronunciation of the word are already known. A child who has heard more words spoken is at an advantage when learning to read.

How does the brain process written words?

Reading is a difficult, multi-step task that must be actively taught and learned. Recent technological breakthroughs have helped to open up what was previously unknown to researchers in terms of how the brain learns to process reading.

Beginning readers use one section of the brain to link the phonetic sounds to the appropriate letter, and a second section to turn them into words. It's a process that takes some time, which is why children learning to read often read very slowly. But then something interesting starts to happen: a third section of the brain begins to take over.

This section helps the child build a permanent registry of familiar words that can be recognized on sight.

This enables them to read by seeing the whole word instead of stopping to sound it out every time they see it. Reading eventually becomes effortless.

Children with dyslexia or other learning disabilities are unable to make a smooth transition between seeing words as individual sounds and seeing them as a complete word.

The different sections of the brain - the one that recognize phonetic sounds, the one that sees them as words, and the one that remembers the words - do not work together fluidly.

Different approaches to reading

Reading and writing in English provides different challenges. Many words in our language (commonly called "sight words") are not phonetic and must be simply learned.

For a time, educators gravitated towards teaching reading only through a whole language approach - looking at context and focusing on meaning rather than learning phonetic sounds.

The latest research, from a study done by the National Reading Panel (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, 2001) concluded that straightforward phonetic instruction is more effective than embedded phonics (where a teacher only points out a phonetic sound in the context of a story).

In the Montessori method, phonics are most definitely taught, but there is also a focus on context, meaning, and comprehension. This blending of phonics and whole language has proven to be extremely effective.

In conclusion

It's important as educators and parents (and both), that we understand the mechanics behind the skill of learning a written language.

The more we understand, the better able we are when there are problems that need to be addressed. Remembering that each child will follow their own timetable can be very helpful.

For some children, reading does come almost as naturally as speaking. For others, it is a struggle.

Focusing on phonics, providing quality children's books, and increasing the kinds of words we use in spoken language can all boost a child's reading power.

IN 1956 William Whyte argued in his bestseller, “The Organisation Man”, that companies were so in love with “well-rounded” executives that they fought a “fight against genius”.

Today many suffer from the opposite prejudice. Software firms gobble up anti-social geeks. Hedge funds hoover up equally oddball quants.

Hollywood bends over backwards to accommodate the whims of creatives and policymakers look to rule-breaking entrepreneurs to create jobs. Unlike the school playground, the marketplace is kind to misfits.

Recruiters have noticed that the mental qualities that make a good computer programmer resemble those that might get you diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome: an obsessive interest in narrow subjects; a passion for numbers, patterns and machines; an addiction to repetitive tasks; and a lack of sensitivity to social cues.

Some joke that the internet was invented by and for people who are “on the spectrum”, as they put it in the Valley. Online, you can communicate without the ordeal of meeting people.

Wired magazine once called it “the Geek Syndrome”. Speaking of internet firms founded in the past decade, Peter Thiel, an early Facebook investor, told the New Yorker that: “The people who run them are sort of autistic.” Yishan Wong, an ex-Facebooker, wrote that Mark Zuckerberg, the founder, has “a touch of Asperger’s”, in that “he does not provide much active feedback or confirmation that he is listening to you.” Craig Newmark, the founder of Craigslist, says he finds the symptoms of Asperger’s “uncomfortably familiar” when he hears them listed.

Similar traits are common in the upper reaches of finance. The quants have taken over from the preppies. The hero of Michael Lewis’s book “The Big Short”, Michael Burry, a hedge-fund manager, is a loner who wrote a stockmarket blog as a hobby while he was studying to be a doctor.

He attracted so much attention from money managers that he quit medicine to start his own hedge fund, Scion Capital. After noticing that there was something awry with the mortgage market, he made a killing betting that it would crash.

“The one guy that I could trust in the middle of this crisis,” Mr Lewis told National Public Radio, “was this fellow with Asperger’s and a glass eye.”

More broadly, the replacement of organisation man with disorganisation man is changing the balance of power. Those square pegs may not have an easy time in school.

They may be mocked by sports jocks and ignored at parties but these days no serious organisation can prosper without them. As Kiran Malhotra, a Silicon Valley networker, puts it: “It’s now cool to be a geek.”

A Multisensory Approach to Reading | SJB Writing

Let me introduce you to another good article from the experiences of SJB:

"A while ago a parent contacted me for help because her child was struggling with reading. He hadn’t picked up phonics in Reception with the rest of his class, and so now his Year 1 teacher wanted to send him back to Reception for another dose of letters and sounds.

His mother was concerned about the effect this would have on his self-esteem and also couldn’t understand how repeating a year of something that clearly hadn’t worked was going to help him move on.

She asked if I had any idea for things she could work on at home with him that might help him progress.

My first thought was that if phonics lessons at school hadn’t worked at all, he was possibly a purely kinaesthetic learner.

This line of reasoning was backed up by the fact that he learnt more physical activities easily: he had learned to ride his bike without stabilisers with no problems at all, and he was already quite accomplished at several sports.

These were all things he would have learnt kinaesthetically. Phonics in school is taught in a visual and auditory way (see the letter, listen to the sound it makes).

I know that some people claim that kinaesthetic learners are catered for because there are actions to go with the letters and sounds, but I’m a kinaesthetic learner myself and I know for a fact that tapping my arm whilst saying “a-a-a”, or holding a finger in front of my mouth to pretend I’m blowing a candle out whilst saying “b-b-b” wouldn’t have helped me to recognise either of those letters.

I suggested helping him experience the letters in a different way. He started getting to know the letters by using wooden ones (magnetic ones would do just as well) that he could pick up so he would be able to feel the shape of each letter.

He explored which letters had straight edges, which had curved edges and which had sharp angles, and as he picked each one up we said together the sound the letter represented.

From there, I stayed with the idea of 3D letters but we moved on to making them. By using straws, rulers, pens, bits of string, blu-tack, sellotape, etc he was able to make his own 3D letters.

With his mum he made some dough, which he fashioned into letter shapes and they baked them. Eating the letters afterwards brought in taste alongside sight, hearing and touch for a truly multi-sensory experience."
